I suck at it using it still, but I've been gravitating towards vi lately (even though we used emacs at school). I guess the reason is that its pretty much a sure bet that you'll find it in out the box in any Linux Distro out there, even among the crazy maverick ones. Also because of my job, I'm use to having to use it to edit the Sudoers file a lot.
I'm leaning toward vi. Like you said it's on almost every box because it's small. The learning curve is a little steeper but the efficiency increase once you have it down seems substantial.
Do "Home" and "End" not work for Ctrl+a and Ctrl+e in bash? I figured they did, but I like Ctrl+u and Ctrl+k.
On my mac the Home and End keys are also the arrow keys so they are kind of out. I would image they work as expected on a keyboard with a normal layout though.
